Edisto Island and Edisto Beach. Edisto Island is one of the last truly undeveloped areas in the Lowcountry region. It has managed to preserve its laid back, country atmosphere. The island was once known for the luxurious Sea Island cotton it produced. Large mansions and plantations, the remnants from this golden age, are still visible and many are open for tours. There are many activities for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, such as camping in Edisto State Park, fishing, boating, and golf at the Edisto Island Club. Located south of Kiawah Island and east of Edisto Island, Edisto Beach is a quiet barrier island community with very little commercial activity. It is the most remote of the many barrier islands associated with Charleston.

Kiawah and Seabrook Islands. Although both of these barrier islands are exclusive, they vary in personality. Kiawah Island, a barrier island named after the Kiawah Indian tribe, is a resort-oriented community offering its residents and visitors access to numerous luxuries, including 10 miles of private beaches, 30 miles of paved bike trails, and five golf courses. Seabrook is smaller and focuses more on privacy and nature preservation. Visitors to Kiawah can now enjoy the Sanctuary, a recently constructed, ultra-luxurious resort hotel. In contrast, Seabrook does not feature any hotels or high-rise condominiums. The residents of Seabrook are committed to preserving the natural habitat and beauty of their island. Both Seabrook golf courses are certified members of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for golf. Seabrook residents have access to two manicured golf courses, a tennis center, a fitness center, and an equestrian center.
