Savannah
Highway (Highway 17 South). Savannah Highway is
the main commercial artery for West Ashley. It is best known for
being home to the Charleston “Auto Mile” and an eclectic
group of small business in strip malls. The area near the intersection
of Savannah Highway and the Mark Clark Expressway (I-526) is an
anticipated growth area. Most recently, a Costco was built near
this interchange. The stretch of Savannah Highway outside of I-526
provides access to growing residential communities located in and
around the Ravenel and Hollywood municipalities.
Highway
61 - Glen McConnell Parkway. Also known as St. Andrews
Boulevard, Highway 61 begins where the Ashley River Bridge crosses
over the Ashley River and continues under the Mark Clark Expressway,
after which it becomes known as the Glen McConnell Parkway. The
commercial district along Highway 61 consists primarily of converted
residential structures that are now home to lawyers, accountants,
insurance agents and realtors. In the area surrounding the Highway
61 / I-526 interchange, the commercial mix becomes heavily influenced
by Bon Secours - St. Francis Hospital, with many private medical
buildings having been constructed within the last decade and many
others now planned. The Glenn McConnell Parkway currently terminates
at Bees Ferry Road, where a new Super Walmart will soon be constructed.
The Glen McConnell will eventually be extended past its current
terminus at Bees Ferry Road all the way to Summerville, which will
open up the area for further commercial development.
Sam
Rittenberg Blvd (Highway 7). Sam Rittenberg is an
older, ancillary commercial corridor serving the West Ashley area.
A retail hub anchored by the Citadel Mall is located near the point
where Sam Rittenberg terminates and intersects with Savannah Highway
and I-526. At the opposite end of Sam Rittenberg, the North Bridge
connects to I-26. Many parts of this older corridor are in the process
of getting a “face-lift”, as evidenced by the recent
redevelopment of Harrell Square near the Citadel Mall.
