Rivers
Avenue. From its point of origin on the Charleston
peninsula until it splits into Highways 52 and 78, Rivers Avenue
provides access to major commercial centers, most significantly
at its northern-most stretch near the Northwoods Mall. The area
near Northwoods Mall is home to many “big box” retailers
such as Target, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Bed Bath & Beyond
and Rooms To Go. In terms of consumer dollars, the Northwoods stretch
of Rivers Ave. is the most significant retail center in the entire
Charleston metropolitan area. The southern end of Rivers Avenue
has not seen the strong growth associated with its northern end.
However, the City of North Charleston’s ambitious “Noisette
Project” is anticipated to have a very positive impact on
the southern sections of Rivers Avenue, especially near its intersection
with E. Montague Avenue.
East
Montague and West Montague/Convention Center. Home
to North Charleston’s historic business district, the area
around East Montague is in the process of gradual revitalization,
sparked most recently by the City of North Charleston’s “Noisette
Project” which will redevelop 3,000 acres located at the northern
half of the former Navy base and several surrounding tracts of land
near the Cooper River. Once North Charleston’s main shopping
district, this area saw a steep decline after the development of
the Northwoods Mall, and the closure of the Navy base. However,
in recent years, more businesses have sprung up in this corridor.
In an effort to restore the vitality of the area, the City of North
Charleston intends to make significant streetscape improvements
to the E. Montague business district. Located just south of the
Charleston International Airport, the West Montague corridor is
conveniently accessed from both I-26 and the Mark Clark Expressway
(I-526). Several new hotels have been constructed in and around
the recently expanded convention complex that includes the North
Charleston Coliseum, the North Charleston Convention Center, and
the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. The new Centre Point
mixed-use development, anchored by Sam's Club, Walmart and the Tanger
Outlets, is located directly across International Blvd from the
Convention Center complex.
