Specializing in Waterfront Property and Traditional
Neighborhoods
José gained an appreciation for real estate
investment long before he became licensed in 2005. At the age of
26, he purchased his first home - out in the country. He was constantly
thinking about what improvements could be made - always with the
mantra of getting the “most bang for the buck.” Eventually,
he sold this home and decided that proximity to town was of the
upmost importance and thus was realized his passion for the traditional
(existing) neighborhoods and infill development. Slowly but surely,
he built up a quiver of homes near the center of town - always focusing
on location and convenience. To varying degrees, he renovated them
all - acting as the general contractor. Through this process he
learned much about construction, investment property, and property
management. Currently, José is studying for his Real Estate
Broker License - a reflection of his passion and dedication to the
profession.
Prior to 2005, his primary occupation was as an
educator / marine biologist with Barrier Island EcoTours, a company
he co-founded with a childhood friend in 1997. This was a dream
come true for the young entrepreneurs - being on the water and sharing
the beauty of the Lowcountry. During his college years, José
attended Emory University and the University of Queensland in Brisbane,
Australia - where he found his passion for Marine Biology. He graduated
with a B.S. degree from the College of Charleston in 1995.
Before launching Barrier Island EcoTours, José
had a diverse work experience:
- In the seafood industry: shrimp farming on
Edisto Island, SC., soft shell crab farming in Campeche, Mexico,
and buying, processing, and exporting grouper and snapper from
Progresso, Yucatan to the United States for the fresh fish (never
frozen) restaurant market.
- In construction: antebellum home restorations
on the Charleston peninsula and the permitting and building of
residential docks.
- Maritime: boat building and boat deliveries
along the east coast as well as Captain of a 130’ oil rig
crew boat in the Gulf of Mexico - apparently his least favorite
job!
Through his experiences on the water, José
has a unique understanding of what draws many people to Charleston:
its wonderful and prolific waterways and the flora and fauna that
call it home.
Born in Mexico City, José immigrated to
the United States at the age of nine. He grew up bilingual - learning
English as a young child while spending summers with grandparents
in New Orleans. His family picked Sullivan’s Island after
surveying both East and West coasts. Thirty years later, José
is a veteran Charleston entrepreneur and seeks to preserve, as well
as promote, its unique offerings.
He is a student of sustainable urban planning,
construction, and the implementation of renewable energies. He is
keenly interested in finding and implementing strategies where citizens
and municipalities can work together to preserve and create value
in their communities; be it through historic preservation, green
spaces, water access, or connectivity via walking and biking trails.
He has previously served as a board member of the Mount Pleasant
Land Conservancy.
In his free time, José enjoys surfing,
trail running, yoga, paddle boarding, reading, and spending time
outdoors - whether in the woods, the marshes, or on the sea floor.
He is a founding member of the Traditional Small Craft Association
- Palmetto Chapter, and a member of the Urban Land Institute, Charleston
Waterkeeper, Sertoma, and SUP Cleanup. He aspires to complete his
private pilot license training in the near future.
José actively brokers both residential
and commercial real estate transactions.
